Jim Harbaugh, the coach of Michigan, is set to sit out the initial three games of the 2023 season due to a suspension sanctioned by the university. In light of this, the team has disclosed the division of coaching responsibilities during his absence.
For the opening game of the season scheduled against East Carolina on September 2nd, Jesse Minter, the defensive coordinator, will assume the role of the game-day coach. On September 9th, facing UNLV, Jay Harbaugh (Jim’s son), who serves as the special-teams coordinator and safeties coach, will oversee the first half. Subsequently, the run-game coordinator and running backs coach, Mike Hart, will step in as the head coach for the second half. On September 16th, in the match against Bowling Green, Sherrone Moore, the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, will lead the team.
Throughout this period, Jim Harbaugh’s father, Jack Harbaugh, will be designated as the assistant head coach.
The looming question pertains to whether the NCAA will impose more severe sanctions on Jim Harbaugh for allegedly providing false information to investigators during an inquiry. Furthermore, uncertainty surrounds Harbaugh’s continuation with Michigan beyond this season or a potential return to the NFL.
Harbaugh’s coaching history includes leading the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014. He engaged in interviews with the Vikings in 2022 and the Broncos earlier this year.
