ChromeOS 116 is being released: Introducing fresh autocorrect, enhanced search for cloud and local Files, and additional features

Google is in the process of rolling out ChromeOS 116, bringing a series of minor additions over the next few days.

Among the updates in ChromeOS 116 is an “enhanced Autocorrection” feature, which comes enabled by default for English in compatible apps when using a physical keyboard. This feature automatically corrects spelling, typing, and other errors. Additionally, Google has improved the performance of Autocorrect, both with the virtual keyboard and in other assistive features.

The Files app has received a search upgrade, now allowing simultaneous searches across local content and Google Drive. The search results page is equipped with various filters, including options such as “My files” or “Everywhere,” as well as time-based filters like “Any time,” “Today,” “Yesterday,” and more. Users can also filter by file types such as Audio, Documents, Images, and Videos.

ChromeOS 116 introduces the capability to convert image-based PDFs into text using OCR (Optical Character Recognition). This enhancement enhances the screen reader experience by making text within these PDFs accessible.

Another notable addition is the ability to personalize the color of individual zones on the RGB keyboard for specific Chromebook models including Acer Chromebook 516 GE, Asus Chromebook Vibe CX34 Flip, Lenovo Ideapad Gaming Chromebook, and the non-gaming HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook. The single-backlight-color option remains available as well.

Lastly, Google has revamped the ChromeOS setup experience. Now, customization options like touchpad scroll direction and display size can be configured before you begin using your Chromebook. This setup flow also incorporates some Material You design elements.
