It might have seemed like a done deal, but the official confirmation arrived recently: C.J. Stroud will be the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans in Week 1 of the regular season.
Selected as the second pick in the NFL Draft held in April, Stroud displayed his capabilities by taking the field for each of the Texans’ initial three preseason games. The decision to draft Stroud early indicated that the team was looking to the future rather than sticking with Davis Mills.
Interestingly, head coach DeMeco Ryans had withheld the announcement for some time, creating an air of suspense. However, following the conclusion of the Texans’ final preseason game on Sunday night, Ryans finally made it official that Stroud would lead the team in Week 1—something that surprised no one.
Although Stroud’s preseason performance wasn’t consistently exceptional, he concluded it on a positive note. In the game against the New Orleans Saints, he connected with Nico Collins for a 3-yard touchdown.
Given Stroud’s high draft selection, great expectations were placed upon his shoulders. The Texans envisioned him as the fresh face of their franchise, drafting him shortly after the Carolina Panthers chose Bryce Young. From the moment he was named the starter for the first preseason game, it became evident that he was destined for the starting role in the regular season as well.
The Texans’ opening match is against the formidable Baltimore Ravens. While it’s a challenging test, the team is eager to witness what their rookie quarterback can deliver on the field.
