WhatsApp is taking steps to enhance the experience for new members joining group chats through a feature called history sharing. This comes at a time of active development for the platform, with recent introductions like WhatsApp Channels in various countries and support for multi-account switching. Those fortunate enough to be part of the beta program have seen these improvements unfold.
The usefulness of history sharing was evident to users connected to WhatsApp Channels, where an influx of messages became visible upon joining due to this feature. Building on this concept, the latest WhatsApp beta version, specifically 2.23.18.5, reveals a similar advancement in progress, this time focused on group chat administrators.
In this evolving version, WABetaInfo has identified a new setting aimed at handling recent history sharing within groups. Upon activation by a group administrator, all current members are promptly informed. As a result, when a fresh participant enters the group, they gain access to the chat history from the preceding 24 hours. While the complete integration for beta users is still pending, WABetaInfo managed to access a preview version of this feature during its developmental phase.
The introduction of history sharing addresses a common challenge faced by new members joining group chats. Without context, involvement in ongoing conversations can be challenging. This update is designed to rectify this issue, enabling new members to swiftly catch up on discussions.
However, group chats are not the sole means of communication for multiple individuals. WhatsApp has introduced Channels, a feature akin to one-to-many messaging seen on social media platforms. After debuting in Singapore and Colombia in June, Channels expanded to seven additional countries by the end of July. Similarly, a user joining a Channel gains visibility into all posts made in the past 30 days, preventing them from encountering an empty chat history.
Recent iterations of WhatsApp beta versions hint at Meta’s, the owner of WhatsApp, efforts to introduce view-once media sharing, schedule video calls akin to Zoom, and bolster user confidence in end-to-end encryption.
